24 hours in the Southern Suburbs

Seeing that Cape Town is a relatively small place, it’s actually quite easy to break it up into sections and explore from there. For example, the West Coast, Northern Suburbs, Boland, City Bowl, Atlantic Seaboard, Southern Suburbs and Southern Peninsula that surrounds it.

If you don’t know by now, we are absolutely in love with the Southern Suburbs. So that’s what this post is all about. What can you do in 24 hours in the Mother City’s Southern Suburbs?

Here are our top picks:

Visit the oldest wine farm in South Africa

Did you know that the oldest wine farm in South Africa is located in the Southern Suburbs? That’s right! Plus, it has some of the best wine in the country.  Groot Constantia celebrated its 330th birthday in 2015, making it the oldest wine estate in the country.

Groot Constantia is extremely well-preserved and the entire estate has been declared a national heritage site, while still being a fully operational farm.

Simply go for a wine tasting, enjoy a scrumptious brunch at Jonkershuis, or sit down for a fine dinner at Simon’s Restaurant.

But why stop the wine train there? The Southern Suburbs is also home to eight other top-class wine farms including Steenberg, Klein Constantia, Constantia Uitsig, Eagle’s Nest Wines, Beau Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Silvermist Vineyards, and Constantia Glen.

Quiz up at Jack Black Brewery

A fairly new addition to the burbs in the South is Jack Black Brewery, located in Diep River. Jack Black Brewery hosts some awesome pub quiz nights and has a fun, relaxing atmosphere. Its delightful craft beers and to-die-for burgers make it the perfect stop for an after-work drink or Friday night spot.

Choose your trail and soak up the sun

One of the top reasons people love the Mother City is the fact that we can live such outdoorsy lives with a marvellous beach, mountain, or trail around every corner. That’s also very true of the Southern Suburbs.

Some of the most beautiful trails in the South to ride or hike include Newlands Forest, Alphen Trail, Tokai Forest, and Silvermine Nature Reserve.

One of our favourite weekend activities – especially in summer – is to go for an early morning hike to Elephant’s Eye (in Silvermine) and end off with a swim in the reservoir and quiet the rumbling tummies with a light picnic.

Surf’s up!

If you’re not from the Southern Suburbs and you love the ocean, what better to do with your time than go for a surf? Muizenberg beach offers some fun waves for beginners and intermediates alike.

If you don’t know how to surf, don’t let it stop you from trying! Go for it. If you missed our Surfing 101 survival guide, make sure you get all the ins and outs here.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens

Located on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch is dubbed one of the top botanical gardens in the world. In summer, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens hosts a series of summer sunset concerts with some fantastic local acts as well as a couple of international acts.

Pack your picnic basket, blanket, and drinks and soak in the atmosphere as the sun sets behind the majestic mountain.

Chill out at the Chart Farm

If you happen to pass through the Southern Suburbs on a Sunday, roses are half price at the Chart Farm in Wynberg. Located just opposite Wynberg Park (nope, that’s not Maynardville Park where you’ve probably watched Shakespeare before), the Chart Farm is the perfect spot for a light afternoon lunch and a glass of wine after which you can grab a bucket and a pair of scissors and head into the gardens. It’s an absolutely mesmerising, therapeutic activity, let me tell you, and your house will look pretty too…
