Five Scenic Road Trips in Cape Town

Five Scenic Road Trips in Cape Town

For a great road trip, you need great music, snacks, and excellent coffee – and obviously an awesome scenic route! Aren’t you lucky to be in the Western Cape where those routes are as abundant as the squirrels in the Company’s Gardens?
We know Chapman’s Peak Drive is the first one to spring to mind but apart from that stunning stretch of road, here are our top five scenic routes for an unforgettable road trip:

Clarens Drive (Overberg)

For those not in the know, Clarens Drive is the gorgeous scenic route from Gordon’s Bay towards Betty’s Bay and the Overberg region. The road is curvy so be careful of getting so mesmerised with the majestic sights that you drive off the cliff! Clarens Drive is particularly popular for bikers on their Sunday morning breakfast run and you’ll quickly realise why.
On this route, you can expect some great surf spots, penguin colonies, botanical gardens, fantastic whale watching, shark cage diving, hiking trails and more.
Noteworthy stops include Rooi Els, Pringle Bay, Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond, Hermanus, Gansbaai, Botrivier, Caledon, Riviersonderend, and Swellendam.

West Coast

One of the best times for a road trip up the West Coast is without a doubt during the flower season (August-September).
However, apart from the colourful flower blanket you’ll see along the way as well as some crisp barrels for surfing, the West Coast offers some stunning, rustic towns all along the coast such as Melkbosstrand, Yzerfontein, Darling, Langebaan, Saldanha, Jacobsbaai, Paternoster and St Helena Bay, each with their unique charm.

Route 62

Thank goodness there’s a scenic alternative to the N2 highway when travelling towards Port Elizabeth! Apart from the ever-so-popular Spice Route, Route 62 also passes through beautiful, quaint, historic towns with wineries, fruit farms, game reserves and much more.
Towns not to miss include Paarl, Rawsonville, Worcester, Robertson, McGregor, Bonnievale, Ashton, Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith, and Calitzdorp.

Cape Point Route

One of the top things that make Cape Town Cape Town, is it’s incomparable, world-renowned Cape Point. Laden with age-old stories of seafarers and discoverers – Cape Point is a true bucket list item. However, let’s not forget the scenic route you’ll witness on your way there. This can be a full-day activity, driving the loop from Cape Town to Cape Point.
Stop at the following spots along the way: Cape Town, Llandudno, Hout Bay, Chapman’s Peak, Noordhoek, Scarborough, Cape Point, Smitswinkel Bay, Simon’s Town, Kalk Bay, and Muizenberg.

Garden Route

The Garden Route is probably one of the most popular scenic road trip routes, with many a foreigner hopping on a Baz Bus to experience all it has to offer.
From mountains, beaches and forests, the Garden Route is a feast for the eyes and a treat for the avid adventurer with plenty of excursions and activities to keep you busy. For those looking to simply relax, it’s truly a route that refreshes the soul.
Noteworthy towns to stop in include Mossel Bay, George, Victoria Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Nature’s Valley and, just over the Eastern Cape border, Storms River Mouth.
