Southern comfort: the white-picket fence dream

Cape Town is a wonderful, diverse city. According to many foreign visitors, it’s one of the most diverse cities they see when they visit South Africa. Each year, more and more people from other parts of the country seem to make the move here with 20%-30% of buyer inquiries attributed to people from Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Cape Town is however a multi-faceted creature, and therefore, not everyone moves here for the same reasons. She promises adventure, natural beauty, nightlife, world-class restaurants and, to some, the white-picket fence dream.

Okay, let’s keep it real though: there isn’t actually a white picket fence involved, but in essence, it’s the dream of suburban life. Where better to settle than Cape Town’s southern suburbs?

The southern suburbs

The southern suburbs comprise the neighbourhoods of Pinelands, Rondebosch, Newlands, Bishopscourt, Claremont, Kenilworth, Wynberg, Plumstead, Constantia, Diep River, and Bergvliet among a couple of others.

Described by many as some of the most sought-after areas, with the biggest properties being in Rondebosch, Bishopscourt, Newlands, Constantia, Bergvliet, and Tokai.

The southern suburbs are mainly English-speaking but with the increasing number of people making the move there, it has become much more Afrikaans over the last couple of years.

What makes the southern suburbs exceptionally special is the fact that it’s suburban living like nowhere else with all of this on your doorstep:

Muizenberg beach is probably the closest beach and, depending on where you live in the suburbs, between 5-15 minutes to reach by car. A little further south, you will find St. James, Kalk Bay, Fish Hoek, and many more. You can easily go for an after-work surf, or meet your family and friends at the beach for a coffee, an ice cream or a sundowner.

Table Mountain’s slopes (which includes the breath-taking Kirstenbosch Gardens) are quite literally your backyard when you live in the southern suburbs. If you’re a keen hiker or runner this is a dream destination, as there are endless trails to explore. Some of the more famous ones being Skeleton Gorge, Constantia Nek, Elephant’s Eye, and Echo Valley.

Forests and greenbelts

Few other places in the city of Cape Town can compare to the majestic Newlands Forest, Tokai Forest, or Alphen greenbelt. With these as options in the southern suburbs, you don’t have to take your dog to walk around the neighbourhood, irritating all the other dogs – you can simply hop in the car, take a 5 or 10-minute drive and unwind in nature with your furry friend. You might even see a couple of horses trotting about because, in the southern suburbs, some people don’t only have dogs or cats as pets, but also horses. We know…

Don’t make the mistake thinking this suburban life will be cut off from the rest of the world, just offering you beaches and trees. Even though that’s amazing, we all need to shop for essentials. The southern suburbs offer a couple of great malls such as Cavendish Square in Claremont, Constantia Village, and Blue Route Mall, among others.

Excellent schools

A big reason many people want to live in the southern suburbs is because it boasts some excellent schools such as Bishops, Wynberg Girls and Wynberg Boys, SACS, Westerford, Rondebosch Boys, Reddam House, Herschel, and many more.

The southern suburbs also offer top restaurants and there’s always something to discover – be it a romantic restaurant on the rocks with waves crashing against the windows such as Harbour House, or a peaceful breakfast on a wine farm such as Jonkershuis at Groot Constantia. The options are endless.
